The Magevney House is a very old and special home in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. You can find it at 198 Adams Avenue in a neighborhood called Victorian Village. This house is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's one of the oldest houses still standing in Memphis today!

History of the Magevney House
Who Built the House?
The Magevney House was built in the 1830s. It was a simple wooden cottage at first. A man named Eugene Magevney built it. He was born in Ireland in 1798.
Eugene Magevney came to the United States in 1828. He moved to Memphis in 1833. He was a very important person in early Memphis. He worked as a teacher and helped lead the community.
Important Events at the House
The Magevney House saw many important moments. These events were special for the Catholic community in Memphis.
- In 1839, the very first Catholic church service in Memphis happened right in this house.
- In 1840, the first Catholic wedding in the city took place here. A priest led the ceremony.
- In 1841, the first Catholic baptism in Memphis was performed at the Magevney home.
The House Becomes a Museum
Eugene Magevney passed away in 1873. Many years later, in 1941, his family gave the house to the City of Memphis. The city decided to turn it into a museum. This way, people could visit and learn about its history.
In 1973, the Magevney House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings and places that are important to American history.
Visiting the Magevney House Today
The house was closed for a few years, from 2005 to 2009. But now, it's open again! The Pink Palace Museum in Memphis helps manage it.
You can visit the Magevney House on the first Saturday of each month. It's open from 1 PM to 4 PM. The best part is that admission is free! The Magevney House is part of the Pink Palace Family of Museums.
