Maggie Carey (born around 1974 or 1975) is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and actress. She is known for directing episodes of popular TV shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and for writing and directing the 2013 movie The To Do List.

Early Life and School Days

Maggie Carey grew up in Boise, Idaho. She went to Jackson Elementary, West Junior High, and graduated from Borah High School in 1993.

In high school, Carey was a very busy student. She took many advanced classes, played sports, and was part of the student council. She was a talented soccer player and was even named an all-American player. Carey also worked as a lifeguard at the Borah High School pool. This summer job later gave her ideas for her movie, The To-Do List.

After high school, Carey attended the University of Idaho for one year. She was then recruited to play Division I soccer for the University of Montana. She was a co-captain of the team and played as a defender. She graduated with a degree in English literature. Later, she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in film production from the University of Texas at Austin.

Career in Film and Television

Carey began her career by creating short comedy films and online shows. In 2007, she and her friend Liz Cackowski created an online series called The Jeannie Tate Show.

She was also a member of the famous comedy group, the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB). The UCB is known for its improv comedy, where performers make up scenes on the spot. Carey performed with the UCB in New York and Los Angeles.

In 2011, Carey directed and co-wrote sketches for the show Funny or Die Presents. The sketches, called "Lady Refs," were about female referees at kids' soccer games.

Her biggest project as a writer and director was the 2013 comedy film The To Do List. The movie is set in her home state of Idaho in 1993. It tells the story of a high school graduate getting ready for college, and was inspired by Carey's own experiences growing up.

Personal Life

In 2006, Carey married actor and comedian Bill Hader. They met in Los Angeles through a friend. Together, they have three daughters.

Carey and Hader separated in 2017 and their divorce was finalized in 2018.
