Magna Vista is what we call a ghost town in Issaquena County, Mississippi. A ghost town is a place where people used to live, but now it's empty. This small settlement was once located right on the famous Mississippi River.
What Was Magna Vista?
Magna Vista started as a small village right on the Mississippi River. It was known as a "postal village" because it had its own post office. In the year 1900, about 50 people lived there. The post office served the community for many years, from 1887 until 1932.
Why Magna Vista Disappeared
In 1934, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started a big project. They began building something called the Newman Cutoff. This project changed the path of the Mississippi River.
The Newman Cutoff created two new lakes. These lakes are called Chotard Lake and Albemarle Lake. They are known as oxbow lakes because they form a curved shape, like the bow of an ox. When the river's path changed, Magna Vista was no longer next to the main river.
Today, the exact spot where Magna Vista used to be is covered by the Mississippi Levee. A levee is a raised bank built to prevent a river from overflowing. Because of these changes, nothing is left of the old settlement.
