What's in a Name?

How Magnan Lake Got Its Name

The study of place names is called "toponymy." Magnan Lake's name has an interesting history. Before it became one big lake, this area was made up of several smaller lakes. These included "Lake Asawewasenan," "Lake Assiwanan," and "Lake des Battures de Sable."

The name "Lac Magnan" was officially recognized on December 18, 1986. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is responsible for naming places in Quebec.

Rivers and Streams that Feed the Lake

Magnan Lake is a reservoir lake. This means its water levels are controlled, usually by a dam. Many rivers and streams flow into Magnan Lake. These are called "inflows."

Some of the main inflows include:

  • McSweeney Lake, which connects through two narrow passages. These are called passe du Lac Fou and passe de la Tête du Magnan.
  • Verreau Bay
  • Déziel Lake
  • Barras Stream
  • Lac Toupin
  • Nimepir River
  • The discharge from Lac Leclerc

Where the Water Goes

Water also flows out of Magnan Lake. These are called "outflows." The water from Magnan Lake eventually flows into Brochu Lake (Gouin Reservoir) and Nevers Lake (Gouin Reservoir). These lakes are also part of the vast Gouin Reservoir system.
