The Story of Magnolia: A Brand's Journey
The Magnolia brand started a long time ago, in 1899. An American named William J. Schober came to the Philippines. He was a cook in the United States Army. After the Philippine–American War, Schober stayed in the Philippines. He began selling his own "magnolia pie" and "magnolia ice cream."
In 1925, Schober sold his "magnolia" business to San Miguel Corporation. At that time, SMC was known as San Miguel Brewery.
Growing the Business: New Plants and Products
Under San Miguel Corporation, the Magnolia dairy plant was first in Manila. In 1970, production moved to a new, modern building. This facility was in Quezon City and was called the Magnolia Dairy Products Plant. It also had a main Magnolia ice cream parlor.
In 1972, SMC started its poultry business. They opened their first chicken processing plant in 1973. This plant made Magnolia Fresh Chicken. This part of the business grew and became a new company in 1991. It was named San Miguel Foods, Inc.
In 1981, SMC created a new company for its butter and margarine products. This company, now called Magnolia, Inc., worked with a New Zealand company. They made products at the Aurora Boulevard plant.
Changes and Comebacks: Joint Ventures
In 1996, SMC joined with Nestlé to form Magnolia-Nestlé Corporation. This new company handled the ice cream and milk businesses. However, SMC still owned the Magnolia brand name. This was because other SMC products also used the name.
In 1998, SMC left the Magnolia-Nestlé partnership. A special agreement stopped SMC from selling ice cream and milk for five years. When this agreement ended in 2004, SMC brought back its own ice cream and milk products. They did this through their company, Magnolia, Inc..
A New Home for Production
In 2008, SMC sold the Aurora Boulevard property. This land was bought by Robinsons Land Corporation. They built a shopping mall, Robinsons Magnolia, and homes there. As a tribute to the old plant, an ice cream parlor named Magnolia Flavor House opened in the mall. It operated from 2012 to 2017.
On May 19, 2010, Magnolia, Inc. opened its main ice cream factory. This new factory is located in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

Trademark Rights: A Name Dispute
In the United States, another company called Ramar Foods International also uses the "Magnolia" name. This company started in 1969 and sells its own ice cream under the Magnolia trademark. Their logo looks very similar to SMC's. However, Ramar Foods has no connection to San Miguel Corporation.
SMC sells its ice cream in the US and Canada under the San Miguel Gold Label brand. But it sells its butter, margarine, and cheese in the US using the Magnolia brand.
In 2015, a US court made a decision about this. The court said that SMC could use the Magnolia brand for its butter, margarine, and cheese products in the US. The court noted that SMC used the Magnolia name to connect with the good reputation it built in the Philippines. This was not to use the reputation Ramar had in the US.
Magnolia Brands Around the World
There are other brands named Magnolia in different countries. It is important to know that these brands are not connected to San Miguel Corporation's Magnolia.
For example, there is a Magnolia brand in Singapore. It is owned by Fraser and Neave Ltd. and started in 1937. This brand is known as F&N Magnolia.
Also, there is no connection between SMC's Magnolia and the Magnolia canned milk from Borden, Inc.
