Families in the Magnoliales Group
The Magnoliales order is made up of six main plant families. Each family has its own unique plants, but they all share some features that place them in this ancient group.
Annonaceae: The Custard Apple Family
This is the largest family in the Magnoliales, with over 2,000 different kinds of plants! Most of them are trees, shrubs, or lianas (woody vines) that grow in warm, tropical places. Some can also be found in cooler areas. This family includes plants that produce tasty fruits like the custard apple.
Degeneriaceae: Pacific Island Trees
This small family has only two types of trees. You can find them growing on islands in the Pacific Ocean. They are quite rare and special.
Eupomatiaceae: Trees from Down Under
Another small family with just two kinds of trees and shrubs. These plants live in New Guinea and the eastern parts of Australia. They are unique to that part of the world.
Himantandraceae: Tropical Asian and Australian Trees
This family also has only two types of trees and shrubs. They grow in tropical areas of Southeast Asia and Australia.
Magnoliaceae: Magnolias and Tulip Trees
This is one of the most famous families in the group, with about 225 different kinds of plants. It includes all the beautiful magnolia trees, known for their large, showy flowers. It also includes tulip trees, which have flowers that look a bit like tulips.
Myristicaceae: The Nutmeg Family
This family has several hundred different kinds of plants. The most well-known plant from this group is the nutmeg tree. The seeds from these trees are used to make the spice we call nutmeg.
