Magnus Julius De la Gardie (born 1668, died 1741) was an important Swedish leader. He was a skilled general in the army and a wise statesman, which means he helped run the country. He was also a key member of a political group called the Hats Party.

A Life of Service
Magnus Julius De la Gardie was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He started his military journey in the French army. There, he fought in a big conflict called the War of the Spanish Succession. This war involved many European countries.
Rising Through the Ranks
After a major battle called the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709, Magnus Julius De la Gardie returned to Sweden. He became a Swedish Colonel and led the Royal Dalarna Regiment. He showed great leadership in the Battle of Gadebusch in 1712. Because of his success, he was promoted to Major General. By 1717, he had become a Lieutenant General.
Becoming a Statesman
After King Charles XII passed away in 1718, Magnus Julius De la Gardie joined the Privy Council of Sweden. This was a special group of advisors to the king or queen. He was also put in charge of the Kommerskollegium in 1719. This board helped manage Sweden's trade with other countries. In 1727, he received the high title of Marshal.
Political Influence
Magnus Julius De la Gardie was a strong supporter of making Sweden closer to France. In 1734, he suggested this idea to the Riksdag of the Estates. The Riksdag was like Sweden's parliament, where different groups of people met to make decisions.
The Birth of a Party
Inspired by French customs, Magnus Julius De la Gardie started hosting special meetings. These were called political salons. They were new to Sweden in the early 1700s. People believe that the famous Swedish Hats Party was actually started at one of these gatherings. The Hats Party was a powerful political group in Sweden for many years.
Family Life
Magnus Julius De la Gardie was married to Hedvig Catharina Lilje. Together, they had several children. These included Pontus Fredrik De la Gardie, Eva Ekeblad, and Hedvig Catharina De la Gardie. He passed away in Stockholm in 1741.
