When Mahalia was eight years old, she and her younger siblings, Eliza-Jane "E.J." and Jackie, sang in the children's choir for their dad's album Two Fires. You can hear their voices on the song "When Your Love is Gone".
At nine, Mahalia joined her siblings E.J., Jackie, and Elly-May Barnes to form a children's singing group called The Tin Lids. Their Christmas album, Hey Rudolph!, released in 1991, sold a lot of copies and became a platinum-selling album!

Working with Joe Bonamassa
Mahalia's album Ooh Yeah! – The Betty Davis Songbook, released in 2015, was a special project. It was a tribute to the American funk and soul singer Betty Davis. This album was Mahalia's first time working with the famous guitarist Joe Bonamassa.
The idea for the album came about when Mahalia played some Betty Davis songs for producer Kevin Shirley. He suggested recording an album and inviting Bonamassa to join. Mahalia continued to work with Bonamassa, even singing backup on his album Blues of Desperation. She also toured with him several times, including a European tour in 2017.
