Ghattamaneni Mahesh Babu (born August 9, 1975) is a famous Indian actor and film producer. He mainly works in Telugu cinema, which is a big part of the Indian film industry. People often call him "Superstar" because he has starred in more than 25 movies. He is one of the highest-paid actors in Indian cinema.

Mahesh Babu has won many awards, including nine Nandi Awards and five Filmfare Telugu Awards. He also owns his own film company called G. Mahesh Babu Entertainment.

He is the younger son of the well-known Telugu actor Krishna. Mahesh Babu started acting as a child when he was just four years old in the film Needa (1979). He continued to act in several films as a child artist. He made his first movie as a main actor in Rajakumarudu (1999).

Mahesh Babu became very popular with films like Murari (2001) and the action movie Okkadu (2003). He has starred in many successful films such as Athadu (2005), Pokiri (2006), Dookudu (2011), and Srimanthudu (2015). Some of his movies are among the highest-earning Telugu films ever.

Besides acting, Mahesh Babu is also known for his charity work. He started the "Mahesh Babu Foundation" to help children who need life-saving heart surgeries. He is also connected with Rainbow Hospitals as a special ambassador. He is married to actress Namrata Shirodkar.

Early Life and School

Ghattamaneni Mahesh Babu was born on August 9, 1975, in Madras, Tamil Nadu. His parents are actor Krishna and Indira. He is the fourth of five children. His family comes from a village called Burripalem in Andhra Pradesh.

Mahesh spent most of his childhood in Madras with his grandmother and other family members. He went to school at St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai. Later, he studied for a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Loyola College, Chennai.

Career Highlights

Starting as a Child Actor (1979–2003)

Mahesh Babu first appeared in a film when he was four years old. This was in the Telugu movie Needa (1979). He acted in a few scenes in the film. He continued to act as a child in movies like Poratam (1983), Sankharavam (1987), and Koduku Diddina Kapuram (1989), where he played two roles!

In 1999, Mahesh Babu became a lead actor in the romantic comedy Rajakumarudu. People started calling him "Prince" after this movie. He won an award for being the Best Male Debut actor. He then starred in Murari (2001), which he considers a very important film for his career.

In 2003, he starred in Okkadu, which was a big hit. He won his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his role in this film. He also acted in Nijam and won his first Nandi Award for Best Actor for his performance.

Becoming a Mainstream Star (2004–2010)

In 2004, Mahesh Babu acted in Arjun, which was a successful movie. It was even shown at the International Film Festival of India.

His film Athadu (2005) was one of the highest-earning movies of that year. Mahesh Babu played a hired assassin and won his second Nandi Award for Best Actor.

In 2006, he worked with director Puri Jagannadh on the film Pokiri. This movie was a huge success and helped him become an even bigger star. He won his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Pokiri.

After a short break, Mahesh Babu returned to films with Khaleja (2010). This movie was about illegal mining and environmental damage. It was praised by critics for its story and Mahesh Babu's acting.

Continued Success (2011–2014)

In 2011, Mahesh Babu starred in Dookudu. This film was very popular and earned a lot of money, making it the highest-grossing Telugu film of that year. For his role, he won his third Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

He then played a mafia leader in Businessman (2012). Critics praised his performance in this movie.

In 2013, he acted in Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, which was a family drama. This was a special film because it was one of the first multi-star films in Telugu cinema in many years, meaning it had more than one big star. It became one of the highest-earning Telugu films of the year. He won his fourth Filmfare Award for Best Actor for this film.

In 2014, he starred in the action thriller 1: Nenokkadine. His acting in this film was highly praised by critics.

Recent Work and Philanthropy (2015–Present)

In 2015, Mahesh Babu worked on the film Srimanthudu. He also helped produce this movie, which was his first time producing a film. The movie was very well-received, and he won his fifth Filmfare Award for Best Actor. After this film, Mahesh Babu even adopted his native village, Burripalem, to help improve it.

In 2017, he made his debut in Tamil cinema with the film Spyder. His next film was Bharat Ane Nenu (2018), where he played a chief minister. His performance in this political drama was highly appreciated.

In 2019, he starred in Maharshi. This film encouraged people to try "weekend farming" and raised awareness about farmers' issues. Many students even participated in a "Campus Farming" contest because of the movie.

Mahesh Babu's film Sarileru Neekevvaru (2020) was also very successful. In 2022, he starred in Sarkaru Vaari Paata. He also produced the film Major (2022), which was based on the life of a brave soldier, Sandeep Unnikrishnan.

In 2024, he reunited with director Trivikram Srinivas for Guntur Kaaram. His next film will be with the famous director S. S. Rajamouli, known for big hits like Baahubali.

Helping Others

Mahesh Babu started the "Mahesh Babu Foundation" to help children and communities in need. The foundation mainly helps children by paying for important heart surgeries. It also works with "Heal A Child" and Rainbow Hospitals to provide financial support for sick children.

The foundation also gives scholarships to bright students from families who don't have much money. To help villages, the Mahesh Babu Foundation adopted two villages: Burripalem in Andhra Pradesh and Siddhapuram in Telangana. In these villages, they have built schools, libraries, roads, and drainage systems. They also set up computer labs to teach digital skills. The foundation provides regular medical checkups, medicines, and even helped vaccinate everyone in the adopted villages against COVID-19.

Mahesh Babu also supported AIG Hospitals' "End Corona Campaign" to teach people about the COVID-19 vaccine. He is a goodwill ambassador for the Heal-a-child Foundation, which helps families pay for medical treatment for seriously ill children. He also joined the Men Against ... and Discrimination (MARD) campaign to speak out against violence.

Mahesh Babu is often called "Superstar of Tollywood" and "Prince Mahesh Babu" by the media. He is one of the most searched actors from South India on Google.

In 2019, a wax statue of Mahesh Babu was put in Madame Tussauds Singapore. He was the first Telugu actor to have a wax statue there. His statue was even brought to his hometown for a day for its unveiling, which was a special event.

His popularity is so great that he has been mentioned in other Telugu films. He joined Twitter in April 2010 and has many followers.

Personal Life

Family

Mahesh Babu married his co-star Namrata Shirodkar on February 10, 2005. They have two children: a son named Gautam and a daughter named Sitara. Gautam played a younger version of Mahesh Babu in the film 1: Nenokkadine (2014). Sitara voiced young Elsa in the Telugu version of Frozen 2 (2019).

Mahesh is the fourth of five children. His elder brother, Ramesh Babu, was also an actor and film producer. His elder sister, Manjula, is a film producer, director, and actress. His younger sister, Priyadarshini, is married to Sudheer Babu, who is also an actor.
