Mahesh Kaul (born April 10, 1911 – died July 2, 1972) was a talented Indian filmmaker. He worked as a director, screenwriter, and actor in the Bollywood film industry. He is remembered for his important contributions to Indian cinema. Mahesh Kaul directed many popular films. Some of his well-known movies include Talaq, Jeewan Jyoti, Diwana, and Sapnon Ka Saudagar.
Early Life and Education
Mahesh Kaul was born on April 10, 1911, in Jodhpur State, which was part of British India. He finished his education at Moni College in Nagpur.
Film Career
Before joining films, Mahesh Kaul worked as a journalist. He also served as a branch manager in a bank. He started his film career as a lyricist, writing songs for movies. He also worked as a dialogue writer, creating the lines spoken by actors.
Mahesh Kaul first appeared as an actor in the film Naya Sansar (1941). This movie was filmed in Mumbai and starred Ashok Kumar and Renuka Devi. He also acted in a bilingual film called Apna Ghar (1942). This film was directed by Debaki Bose.
He made a big impact as a dialogue writer for another bilingual film, Mahatma Vidur (1943). His first film as a director was Angoori (1943). Later, his first superhit film as a director was Gopinath (1948). This movie starred famous actors Raj Kapoor and Tripti Mitra.
After Gopinath, Mahesh Kaul directed Naujawan (1951). This film also became very popular across India. In 1959, he acted in Guru Dutt's film Kaagaz Ke Phool. He played the role of Guru Dutt's father-in-law. He took on this role because his close friend Guru Dutt asked him to.
Mahesh Kaul continued to make popular films. He directed Pyar Ki Pyaas (1961) and Sautela Bhai (1962). In Sautela Bhai, Guru Dutt played the main character. Many people consider this to be one of Guru Dutt's best acting performances.
Mahesh Kaul also made Rakhi Rakhi (1969) for the Film Institute of India. His last film was Agni Rekha, starring Sanjeev Kumar and Sharada. This film was released in 1973, after Mahesh Kaul had passed away.
Personal Life
Mahesh Kaul got married later in life, at the age of 50. He married Indira Malkani, who later became known as Indira Mahesh Kaul. Their marriage was a love marriage. They had a daughter named Monika Kaul and a son named Roopesh Kaul.
Mahesh Kaul was the adopted son of Bhola Nath Kaul and Kailash Rani Kaul. His biological parents were Bhishambher Nath Kaul and Chando Kaul. He had several brothers: Jainath Kaul, Iqbal Nath Kaul, Munishwar Nath, and Rameshwar Nath Kaul. His nephew, Mani Kaul, also became a celebrated filmmaker.
