Mahmoud Yavari (Persian: محمود یاوری) was a famous Iranian football player and coach. He was born on October 11, 1939, in Isfahan, Iran. He played as a defender and later became a coach for many different football teams. He even coached the main Iranian national football team for a short time in 1984. Mahmoud Yavari was known as one of the oldest and most experienced coaches in Iranian football history. He passed away on November 10, 2020.

Playing Career
Mahmoud Yavari loved football from a young age. He started his journey as a player.
Club Player
Yavari began his club career at Shahin Isfahan. This was his first team. Later, he joined PAS Tehran when the club was new. He played alongside other great players like Ranjbar and Habibi. Mahmoud Yavari played as a defender. He stopped playing for PAS Tehran in 1969. This was when he retired as a player.
International Player
In 1967, Mahmoud Yavari was invited to join the Iran national football team. This is the main team for Iran. He played his first game for Iran on May 10, 1968. The match was against the Hong Kong national football team. He played only three games for his country. He did not score any goals in these matches.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Mahmoud Yavari became a football coach. He coached many teams throughout his long career.
First Coaching Jobs
In 1969, Zob Ahan football club was created. Yavari became their very first head coach. He was new to coaching, so he left the team in 1970.
Next, he became the coach for another Isfahan team, Sepahan. He coached Sepahan for eight seasons. In 1978, he left Sepahan and quickly joined Bargh Shiraz. However, he left Bargh Shiraz in the same year. Sepahan then asked Yavari to come back. He coached Sepahan again until 1980.
Leading the National Team
In 1980, Mahmoud Yavari was chosen to coach the Iran national under-20 football team. These were very successful years for him. Because of his good results, he was then appointed coach for the Iran national Olympic team in 1982.
On August 7, 1984, he became the head coach of the main Iran national football team. With his assistant, Nasser Ebrahimi, they helped build a strong new team. He coached six matches for the national team. They won all six games! He resigned on December 1, 1984. After coaching the senior team, he returned to coach the under-20 team in 1985. He stayed with them until 1996.
Later Coaching Adventures
In 1996, he coached Bargh Shiraz again. In 1998, he became the head coach of Fajr Sepasi. He left that team in 1999. After that, he returned to PAS Tehran as head coach for a short time in 1999.
Mahmoud Yavari continued to coach many different teams. In 2010, he joined Saba. He left Saba a few months later. He coached Steel Azin from April to May 2011. On November 27, 2011, he became the head coach of Fajr Sepasi again. He coached them for two seasons.
In July 2013, he was named head coach of Mes Kerman. He resigned from Mes Kerman on September 14, 2013. He then became head coach of Fajr Sepasi for a third time. After Fajr's team was moved to a lower league, Yavari resigned and retired from coaching.
