Club History: From Tehran to Qom
Early Days as Mohemmat Sazi
The club started in 1974 in Tehran. It was first known as Mohemmat Sazi Football Club. For many years, the team played in the lower football leagues in Iran. They did not achieve much success during this time. In the 1990s, the club had different sponsors.
Becoming Saba Battery
In 2002, a big change happened. The club was bought by Saba Battery Company. This company is linked to Iran's Ministry of Defense. With new money, the team could buy better players. This helped them get promoted to the top league, the Iran Pro League, in 2004.
Winning Trophies
In their first year in the Iran Pro League, Saba Battery did very well. They won the Hazfi Cup in 2005. This win allowed them to play in the AFC Champions League. They also won the Iranian Super Cup in 2005. They beat Foolad 4–0 in that match. For many years, they were the only team to hold this Super Cup title.
In 2007, Saba Battery reached the Hazfi Cup final again. However, they lost to Sepahan this time.
Moving to Qom City
In 2008, the club moved from Tehran to Qom. Tehran already had many football teams. Moving helped Saba Qom find a new home and fans. After the move, the team was renamed Saba Qom.
Saba Qom finished 6th in the league in 2008–09 and 2009–10. In the 2011–12 season, they finished 4th. This earned them a chance to play in the 2013 AFC Champions League play-offs. But they lost in a penalty shootout and did not reach the group stage.
Ali Daei as Coach
In July 2015, the famous Iranian football player Ali Daei became the coach. He led the team for the 2015–16 season. Saba Qom started strong, hoping to qualify for the AFC Champions League. But their performance dropped later in the season. They finished in seventh place.
