Club History
Early Days: Mohemmat Sazi
The club started in 1974 as Mohemmat Sazi Football Club. It was based in Tehran. For many years, the team played in the lower football leagues in Iran. They did not have much success back then.
In the 1990s, different companies sponsored the club. First, a company called Maham helped them. Later, an electronics company named Sanam became their sponsor.
Becoming Saba Battery
In 2002, a big change happened. The club was bought by the Saba Battery Company. This company is connected to Iran's Ministry of Defense. With new owners, the club had much more money. This allowed them to buy skilled players. Because of this, the team got much better. They were promoted to the top league, the Iran Pro League, in 2004.
Winning Trophies
First Big Wins (2004–2005)
In their first year in the Iran Pro League, Saba Battery did very well. They won the Hazfi Cup in 2005. This win meant they could play in the AFC Champions League. This is a big competition for Asian football clubs.
In the same year, 2005, Saba Battery also won the Iranian Super Cup. They beat the league champions, Foolad, with a score of 4–0. For many years, Saba Battery was the only team to hold this Super Cup title.
Hazfi Cup Runners-up (2006–2007)
The 2006–2007 season was not as good for Saba Battery in the main league. However, they played well in the Hazfi Cup again. They reached the final but lost to Sepahan by a total score of 4–2 over two games. This meant they did not qualify for the AFC Champions League that year.
Moving to Qom
In 2008, Saba Battery Football Club moved to the city of Qom. They changed their name to Saba Qom. The move happened because Tehran already had many football teams. Also, not many fans came to watch Saba's games in Tehran.
After moving, Saba Qom became one of the few teams that kept the same manager for a whole season. They finished in 6th place in both the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons.
In the 2011–12 season, Saba Qom finished 4th in the league. This earned them a chance to play in the 2013 AFC Champions League play-offs. However, they lost to Al Shabab in a penalty shootout. So, they did not make it to the group stage of the competition.
Ali Daei as Coach
In July 2015, a famous Iranian football player, Ali Daei, became the coach of Saba Qom. The team started the 2015–16 season well. They were hoping to qualify for the AFC Champions League again. But in the second half of the season, their performance dropped. They ended up finishing in seventh place.
