Sultan Mahmud Shah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu’azzam Shah (born 4 February 1868 – died 19 June 1917) was an important ruler in the history of Pahang. He was the second modern Sultan of Pahang, ruling from 1914 to 1917. A Sultan is a powerful leader, often like a king, who governs a state or kingdom.
Sultan Mahmud Shah was born as Tun Long Mahmud. He was the second son of Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu’azzam Shah. His mother was Cik Pah binti Arshad.
Early Life and Family
Sultan Mahmud Shah was born on 4 February 1868. His birthplace was the Royal Palace in Pekan Lama, Pahang. He was known as Tun Long Mahmud when he was young.
His father was Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu’azzam Shah. His mother was Cik Pah binti Arshad. She was also part of the Royal House of Pahang.
Becoming a Prince
On 5 December 1884, Tun Long Mahmud was given the title of Tengku. This title is usually given to princes or members of the royal family in Malaysia. It showed his important position in the royal family.
His Siblings
Sultan Mahmud Shah had several siblings. One of his notable siblings was his stepbrother, Abdullah al-Mu'tassim Billah of Pahang. Abdullah was born on 12 October 1874. He later became the Tengku Mahkota, which means Crown Prince.
Reign as Sultan
Sultan Mahmud Shah became the Sultan of Pahang in 1914. His official coronation took place on 29 May 1914. He took over the rule from his father, Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu’azzam Shah.
During his time as Sultan, his health was not very good. Because of this, he could not take a very active part in leading the state. Despite his short reign, he was an important figure in Pahang's history.
Succession and Legacy
Sultan Mahmud Shah passed away on 19 June 1917. He died at Istana Sri Terentang in Kuala Pahang. He was buried the next day, on 20 June 1917. His burial place is the Royal Cemetery in Kampung Marhum, Kuala Pahang.
Since he did not have an heir to take over, his brother became the next ruler. His stepbrother, Abdullah al-Mu'tassim Billah of Pahang, succeeded him as Sultan.
