Mahura is a group of tiny spiders found only in New Zealand. They are often called funnel weavers because of the shape of their webs. These spiders are quite small, usually only about 1.5 to 3.5 millimeters long. That's smaller than a grain of rice! They were first described by scientists Raymond Robert Forster and C. L. Wilton in 1973.
Types of Mahura Spiders
There are many different kinds of Mahura spiders. As of April 2019, scientists have identified eighteen different species! Each one is unique, but they all belong to the Mahura group.
