Maia Ciobanu's Early Life and Studies
Maia Ciobanu grew up in Bucharest, the capital city of Romania. She went to the Conservatory Ciprian Porumbescu to study music. There, she learned how to compose music from teachers like Dan Constantinescu and Myriam Marbe. She also studied piano with Aurora Ienei. Other important teachers included Ștefan Niculescu, Mircea Chiriac, Liviu Comes, and Aurel Stroe.
In 1980, Maia attended special summer courses in Darmstadt, Germany. She continued to learn about composition from famous composers like Brian Ferneyhough and Gérard Grisey. Later, in 1995, she studied at the Swedish Academy of Music in Gothenburg.
Maia Ciobanu's Career and Achievements
Since 1992, Maia Ciobanu has been the music director for a group called the Group for Alternative Contemporary Music. In 1993, she became a professor at the Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film. She has taught courses about Romanian music in many places. These include music academies in Gothenburg (1995) and Cologne (1996). She also taught at the Pedagogical College of Rorschach (1997) and the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland (2000).
Awards and Recognition
Maia Ciobanu has won several important awards for her work.
- In 1981, she received an Honorable Mention at a competition in Germany.
- In 1998, she won the "George Enescu Prize" from the Romanian Academy.

Maia Ciobanu was the president of the Romanian Section of the International Society for Contemporary Music from 2002 to 2003. She also started and edits an English-language journal for this section called Contemporary Music – Romana Newsletter. She is active in publishing music and creates music programs for Romanian radio.
