The Maine Woods Office, now known as the Phillips Community Building, is a very old and special building in Phillips, Maine. It was built way back in 1848 by a local lawyer. This building is important because it's a rare example of a business building made in the Gothic Revival style. It was also the first home of the Maine Woods newspaper, which shared exciting news about hunting and fishing in Maine with people all over the world! The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, meaning it's a historically important place.

The Phillips Community Building

What Does It Look Like?

The Phillips Community Building is a two-and-a-half story wooden building. It sits on a strong granite foundation. The roof is very steep and comes to a point at the front.

The outside of the building is covered with special vertical boards. These boards have thin strips covering the seams. This style is called "board-and-batten siding." It was very popular in Gothic Revival buildings.

The front of the building has three sections. There are two large windows on either side of the main door. Upstairs, there are three regular windows. High up in the pointed part of the roof, there is a window shaped like a Gothic arch. This building is one of the few business buildings in Maine built in the Gothic Revival style.

A Building with Many Lives

This building has been used for many different things since it was built in 1848. A well-known local lawyer and businessman named Moses Sherburne built it.

From 1851 to 1902, the upstairs part of the building was used by a local group called the Masonic lodge. They used it as their meeting place for over 50 years.

In 1878, the downstairs became the office for the Maine Woods newspaper. This newspaper was very popular. It shared news about hunting and fishing in Maine with people not just in the area, but all around the world!

In 1918, a local church bought the building. Since then, it has been used as a community meeting place. It's a place where people in Phillips can gather for events and activities.
