History of Maineville
Maineville became an official village on March 23, 1850. Its name comes from the state of Maine. Many of the first families who settled here came from towns in Maine, like Phillips and Farmington.
Early Settlers and Names
Nearly one hundred families moved from Maine to this area. Their journey took between 30 and 60 days. The new settlement was first called "Yankeetown." Later, it was also known as "Maineville." In 1850, it was officially named Maineville when it became a village.
Village Flag
A special flag for Maineville was designed by John Michael. He later became the mayor of the village. The flag shows symbols from both Ohio and Maine. It connects the two states, showing where the first settlers came from. The Maineville Council officially adopted this flag in 1994. A post office was opened in Maineville in 1854.
