Maité Allamand (born October 29, 1911 – died January 3, 1996) was an important writer and diplomat from Chile. Her birth name was Jeanne Dominique Marie Therese Allamand Madaune. She came from a French family living in Chile.
Maité Allamand played a big role in starting children's literature in Chile. She helped create many books for young readers. She was also in charge of the PEN Club, which is a group for writers. She was a member of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) too. Maité Allamand won several awards for her work. These included the 1962 Municipal Prize of Santiago for short stories. She also received the 1969 IBBY CRAV prize.
Early Life and Education
Maité Allamand spent her childhood in the countryside. Her family lived near the Maule River because her father's job moved them there. This time in the countryside greatly influenced the stories she later wrote.
In 1920, she started school at the Sacred Heart College of Talca. There, she learned to speak and read Spanish. This was important for her future writing career.
Working as a Diplomat
After finishing her education, Maité Allamand became a diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in another country. She worked for Chile in Belgium. She was able to do this because she was very good at speaking French.
She worked in Belgium from 1932 until 1940. In 1940, she married a doctor and researcher named Luis Hervé.
