MABBIM stands for the Language Council of Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia. It is a special group that helps develop the Malay language in Southeast Asia. This group started as MBIM, the Language Council of Indonesia-Malaysia. It began on December 29, 1972. This happened after Malaysia's Education Minister, Tun Hussein Onn, and Indonesia's Education Minister, Mashuri Saleh, signed an agreement in Jakarta. Brunei joined the council on November 4, 1985. That's when MBIM became MABBIM. Singapore also watches their meetings as an observer.
