The Makena Beach & Golf Resort Maui was a special place to stay in the Makena area of Maui, Hawaiʻi, United States. It was a resort with a beautiful beach and a golf course.

This resort was first known as the Maui Prince Hotel. It was designed by architects Anbe, Aruga, and Ishizu. The hotel opened its doors in August 1986. It had many rooms and fancy suites. These led to an open-air area with outdoor swimming pools. There was also a peaceful Asian garden with pretty waterfalls.

In July 2016, the owners of the resort decided to close it. They wanted to build new luxury homes there instead. This new community was going to be called the Makena Golf and Beach Club.

History of the Resort

How the Resort Started

In 1983, a Japanese company called Seibu Hawaii, Inc. bought a great piece of land. It was right by the beach in Makena. Architects from Honolulu then designed the hotel. The Maui Prince Hotel resort opened in August 1986. A very large area of land, about 1,300 acres, around the hotel and golf courses was kept natural.

Changes in Ownership

The Seibu Group of Japan managed the Maui Prince Hotel until 2007. After that, some developers and people who invest money, like Everett Dowling and Morgan Stanley, took over. They tried to run it until September 2009.

In July 2010, the hotel was sold again. A group of investors bought it. This group included AREA Property Partners, Trinity Investments LLC, and Stanford Carr Development LLC. Then, a company called Landmark Hotels Group, Inc. started managing the resort. They changed its name to the Makena Beach & Golf Resort in January 2012.

What the Resort Offered

The resort was located close to the Wailea Golf Courses. It had 290 rooms and 20 suites for guests. There were two outdoor swimming pools. One pool was for adults, and another was for children.

The resort also had an 18-hole golf course. This course was designed by a famous golf course designer, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. For sports lovers, there were six tennis courts and a fitness room. Guests could also relax in a Jacuzzi. The resort offered help with water sports activities.

There was a shopping area and a salon at the resort. You could even get a massage in your room! A special spa, the Makena Kai Day Spa, offered Hawaiian healing treatments. These included massages, facials, and body treatments. The resort had four restaurants and two bars. They often had local Hawaiian music playing at night.

Plans for the Future and Closure

In 2014, a group led by Stanford Carr, a developer from Hawaii, shared their plans. They told the Maui Planning Commission they wanted to change the resort. Their idea was to turn it into luxury apartments and a hotel.

In 2016, the owners, ATC Makena Holdings, LLC, made a big announcement. They owned the entire 1,800-acre Makena Resort. They said the Makena Beach & Golf Resort would close on July 1 at noon. The hotel building was later taken down in 2018.
