The Makkal Needhi Maiam (which means Centre for People's Justice), often called MNM, is a political party in India. It mainly works in the state of Tamil Nadu and the area of Puducherry.

This party was started by a famous actor, Kamal Haasan, in Madurai on February 21, 2018. He also showed the party's flag for the first time. The flag has six hands linked together. This shows how the five Southern states of India and one Union Territory should work together. The party's election symbol is a battery torchlight.

The Makkal Needhi Maiam party has also created a special mobile app called 'Maiam Whistle'. This app lets people report problems or concerns to the party. The party currently has about 5,500 people working in different roles.

Party Leadership

The Makkal Needhi Maiam party has several important leaders who help run it.

Key Leaders

Kamal Haasan is the President of the Makkal Needhi Maiam party. In 2021, he chose Mr. A.G. Mourya IPS (Retired) and Mr. Thangavelu to be the Vice-Presidents of the party.

The party also has many other leaders who manage different areas. These include secretaries for the headquarters, media, student groups, women's groups, and more. Kamal Haasan announced these new leaders on June 26, 2021.

Election Results

The Makkal Needhi Maiam party has taken part in several important elections in India.

National Elections

The party participated in the 2019 Indian general election for the Lok Sabha (India's main parliament). They chose to contest 37 seats in Tamil Nadu and 1 seat in Puducherry. Even though they didn't win any seats, they received about 0.40% of the total votes across India.

In Tamil Nadu, the Makkal Needhi Maiam party got over 1.6 million votes. They did quite well in big cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai, often getting between 8.5% and 12.5% of the votes in those areas. However, they did not perform as strongly in rural areas. Despite getting many votes, none of their candidates won a seat, and they lost their election deposit in all the places they contested.

State Elections

The Makkal Needhi Maiam party also contested the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. They put forward candidates in 142 different areas. Kamal Haasan had said that his party would not join forces with the two main parties in Tamil Nadu, DMK or AIADMK.

In this election, the party did not win any seats. Kamal Haasan himself ran for a seat in the Coimbatore South area but lost by a small number of votes. Later, the MNM party decided to support a candidate from the Congress party in a special by-election.

The party also took part in the 2021 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election. They contested 22 seats but did not win any. They received about 1.89% of the votes in Puducherry.
