The Makkal Needhi Maiam (which means Centre for People's Justice), often called MNM, is a political party in India. It mainly works in the state of Tamil Nadu and the area called Puducherry.
The famous actor Kamal Haasan started this party in Madurai on February 21, 2018. He also showed the party's flag for the first time. The flag has six hands linked together. These hands stand for teamwork among the southern states of India.
The party's special election symbol is a battery torchlight. This symbol helps people easily recognize the party when they vote.
MNM also created a mobile app called 'Maiam Whistle'. This app lets people report problems or concerns to the party. The party has about 5,500 people who work for it in different roles.

Party Leadership
The Makkal Needhi Maiam party has different leaders who help run things. Kamal Haasan is the President of the party.
In 2021, Mr. A.G. Mourya and Mr. Thangavelu were chosen as Vice-Presidents. The party also has many State Secretaries. These leaders help manage different parts of the party's work. For example, there are secretaries for media, students, and women's groups.
How the Party Performs in Elections
Political parties take part in elections to win seats and represent people. MNM has participated in elections for the Lok Sabha (India's main parliament) and state assemblies.
Lok Sabha Elections
In the 2019 Indian general election, MNM competed for 37 seats. They did not win any seats in this election. The party received about 0.40% of the total votes across India. In Tamil Nadu, they got over 1.6 million votes.
The party did quite well in cities like Chennai and Coimbatore. However, they did not get as many votes in rural areas. Even though they got many votes in some places, all their candidates lost their deposit. This means they didn't get enough votes to get back the money they paid to run in the election.
State Assembly Elections
MNM also takes part in elections for state assemblies. These are like smaller parliaments for each state.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021
For the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, Kamal Haasan started the party's campaign in December 2020. MNM ran candidates in 142 areas. They did not form an alliance with the two main parties in Tamil Nadu, DMK or AIADMK.
The party did not win any seats in this election. Kamal Haasan himself ran for a seat in Coimbatore South. He lost by a small number of votes. Later, MNM supported a candidate from the Congress party in a special by-election.
Puducherry Assembly Election 2021
In the 2021 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election, MNM also ran candidates. They competed for 22 seats. Similar to Tamil Nadu, the party did not win any seats in Puducherry. They received about 1.89% of the votes there.
Recent Elections
2024 Lok Sabha Election
For the 2024 Indian general election, the Makkal Needhi Maiam party decided to support the INDIA group. Kamal Haasan joined their campaign. He helped campaign for the DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu. As part of this agreement, the DMK agreed to give MNM one seat in the Rajya Sabha (another part of India's parliament) for the 2025 elections.
