Sir Malcolm Rognvald Innes of Edingight (born May 25, 1938 – died September 20, 2020) was a very important person in Scottish history and traditions. He held the special job of Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland from 1981 until 2001. Think of him as the chief expert and official for all things related to Scottish coats of arms and family histories.

Early Life and Education

Malcolm Innes was the son of Sir Thomas Innes of Learney, who was also a Lord Lyon King of Arms before him, from 1945 to 1969. His mother was Lady Lucy Buchan.

He went to school at Edinburgh Academy and then studied law at the University of Edinburgh.

Career in Heraldry

Sir Malcolm began his career as a Writer to the Signet in 1964. This is a type of lawyer in Scotland.

His first role in heraldry, which is the study of coats of arms and family history, was as Falkland Pursuivant of Arms Extraordinary from 1957 to 1958. A Pursuivant is an officer of arms, helping with ceremonies and records.

He then became Carrick Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary from 1958 to 1971. After that, he was promoted to Marchmont Herald of Arms in Ordinary from 1971 to 1981. A Herald is a senior officer of arms, even more important than a Pursuivant.

From 1966 to 1981, he also worked as the Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records. This meant he was in charge of keeping all the official records of Scottish coats of arms.

Lord Lyon King of Arms

In 1981, Sir Malcolm became the Lord Lyon King of Arms. This is the highest position in Scottish heraldry. He held this important role for 20 years, until 2001.

During the same time, he was also the Secretary to the Order of the Thistle. This is a very special group of knights and ladies in Scotland, chosen by the King or Queen.

After Retirement

After he retired in 2001, Sir Malcolm was given the honorary title of Orkney Herald of Arms Extraordinary.

He was also a co-founder and former president of the Heraldry Society of Scotland. This society helps people learn about and enjoy heraldry. He was also the Honorary President of the Scottish Genealogy Society for many years.

Sir Malcolm received several honors for his work. He was made a Commander of the CVO in 1981 and then a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in 1990. These are special awards given by the British monarch.

He was also a member of the Royal Company of Archers since 1971. This is a special group that acts as the King's or Queen's bodyguards in Scotland. He was also a Grand Officer of Merit of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a very old organization known for its charity work.

Sir Malcolm passed away in September 2020 at the age of 82.
