The Sweet Start of Malley's
The story of Malley's Chocolates began in 1935. A man named Albert "Mike" Malley borrowed $500 to start his dream. He opened his first candy store in Lakewood, Ohio. The Malley family even lived right behind the store. Their hard work paid off. By 1949, they were able to open a second store, also in Lakewood.
Where Malley's Makes Its Treats
In 2010, Malley's moved its main office back to Lakewood, Ohio. This was close to where the company first started. The move helped create more space at their main factory. This factory is a huge 60,000 square-foot building in Cleveland. It is easy to spot because it has three tall pink silos. These silos have the words "Milk," "Sugar," and "Cocoa" painted on them.
Special Malley's Treats
Malley's is famous for some special treats. Around Valentine's Day, a team of 50 people works to make their signature chocolate-covered strawberries. Other popular items include chocolate-covered orange peels, which are available all year. In early summer, they also offer delicious chocolate-covered grapes.
Malley's in the Community
Malley's Chocolates has been a part of many events. For example, they were a vendor at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland. This big event brought many people to the city.
Expanding to New Places
In October 2017, Malley's opened its 23rd store. This new store was in Plain Township, near Canton. It was the first time Malley's opened a store in Stark County. However, they already had stores in the nearby Summit County.
The Voice of Malley's
Adele Ryan Malley is known as the "voice" of Malley's. She is the widow of Bill Malley, who was the founder's son.
Fun Promotions at Malley's
Dan Malley, who was once the president of Malley's, is known for his fun and unusual promotions. He is part of the third generation of the Malley family to run the company.
Famous Faces and Bunny Ears
Dan Malley has convinced famous people from Cleveland to appear in the Malley's catalog. These celebrities, like Natalie Ronayne and Beth Mooney, wear fuzzy bunny ears in the pictures. This is a fun event that happens every year.
"CHOC" Bumper Stickers
Malley's has also given out 50,000 "CHOC" oval bumper stickers. If a Malley's team member spots a car with this sticker, the driver wins $25. They also get a chance to win $500!
Pink Volkswagen Beetles
Perhaps the most unique promotion involved pink Volkswagen Beetles. Dan Malley convinced 25 people to lease and drive these cars. The cars were decorated with the Malley's and "CHOC" logos. Malley's pays the drivers $150 each month. They also help set up the $300 monthly lease through a car dealer in Cleveland.
