2016 Republican National Convention facts for kids

The 2016 Republican National Convention was a big meeting held by the Republican Party in the United States. It was the 41st time this event took place. The convention happened in Cleveland, Ohio, from July 18 to July 21, 2016.
The main goal of this meeting was for people called delegates to choose the Republican Party's candidates for president and vice president. These candidates would then run in the 2016 presidential election. Delegates are like representatives; they vote on behalf of many other people.
Three main candidates were hoping to become the presidential nominee:
- Donald Trump, a businessman from New York.
- Ted Cruz, a U.S. senator from Texas.
- John Kasich, the Governor of Ohio.
There were 2,472 delegates at the convention. To win the chance to be president, a candidate needed to get at least 1,237 votes from these delegates. This number is more than half of all the delegates.
Choosing the Nominees
The convention was held over four days in July 2016. During this time, the delegates cast their votes. After all the votes were counted, Donald Trump was chosen as the Republican Party's candidate for president. He picked Mike Pence to be his running mate, who would become vice president if they won the election.
