Mallikarjuna Raya (also known as Deva Raya III) was an Emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire. He was born in 1420 and ruled from 1446 until July 14, 1465 CE. He belonged to the Sangama Dynasty, which was a powerful family that ruled the Vijayanagara Empire for many years.
Mallikarjuna Raya became emperor after his father, Deva Raya II. His father had been a very successful ruler. Deva Raya II brought great wealth and a "golden age" to the Sangama Dynasty. However, Mallikarjuna Raya's time as emperor was quite different from his father's. Many people saw him as a weak and not-so-good leader.

Mallikarjuna Raya: An Emperor's Story
Early Challenges and Victories
When Mallikarjuna Raya first became emperor, he faced big challenges. Two powerful groups, the Bahmani Sultanate and the Gajapati Empire, tried to invade his kingdom. The Bahmani Sultanate was a Turko-Persian kingdom. The Gajapati Empire was also very large at that time. It stretched from the Ganges River all the way to the Kaveri River.
Mallikarjuna Raya managed to defend his empire against these early attacks. This was a good start to his rule. He showed strength in protecting his lands.
Later Defeats and Decline
Sadly, after these early successes, Mallikarjuna Raya's rule became much weaker. His reign was marked by many defeats. The Gajapatis started taking over parts of the Vijayanagara Empire. They captured Rajamahendri in 1454. Later, in 1463, they also took Udayagiri and Chandragiri.
At the same time, the Bahmani Sultanate also gained more power. By 1450, they had taken control of a large part of the Vijayanagara Empire. They were getting closer and closer to the capital city of Vijayanagara. These losses showed that Mallikarjuna Raya was struggling to keep his empire strong.
End of His Rule
The many defeats and the weak leadership of Mallikarjuna Raya led to problems for the Sangama Dynasty. His own nephew, Virupaksha Raya II, saw a chance to take control. Virupaksha Raya II managed to seize the throne from Mallikarjuna Raya.
It is not known what happened to Mallikarjuna Raya after he lost his position as emperor. Even though Virupaksha Raya II took over, he did not prove to be a better ruler. The empire continued to face difficulties after Mallikarjuna Raya's reign ended.
