About Maltby Academy
Maltby Academy welcomes students from ages 11 to 18, including a sixth form for older students. The school is located on Braithwell Road, near the A631 road. It became an academy in January 2010.
In 2014, the school completed a major building project. This project cost £10.9 million and included new buildings, some demolitions, and renovations. The old clock tower from the original school still stands. In 2022, the Maltby Learning Trust received £4.5 million to redevelop the old Maltby Grammar School building.
School History
Maltby Academy has a long history. It first opened as Maltby Grammar School in 1931. This was a school for both boys and girls. It was built on the site of Rolleston Hall. Sir Percy Jackson officially opened the school on April 16, 1932. The grammar school's motto was 'Per Laborem Ad Honorem', which means 'Through Work to Honour'.
The Maltby Hall Secondary Modern School was on Braithwell Road. It joined with the grammar school in 1967. This was when the school became a comprehensive school.
Becoming a Comprehensive School
New buildings were added in the 1960s to help the school become a comprehensive. It was renamed Maltby Comprehensive School. Alan Bullock, a well-known academic, officially opened it on October 7, 1967. The school fully became a comprehensive by 1974. This happened as all the students from the old grammar school system finished their studies.
Changes and Academy Status
In December 1998, there was a fire at the school. The fire started in the school library.
Later, in January 2010, the school changed again. It became a sponsored academy. This change was made to help the school improve. Initially, an educational technology company called U-Explore supported the school. However, in 2014, the school joined the Maltby Learning Trust. This is a group of schools that work together.
Student Performance
Maltby Academy's GCSE results are similar to other schools in the Rotherham area. These results are generally close to the average for England. A-level results at the academy are also similar to the average for Rotherham.
The Maltby Learning Trust
Maltby Academy is part of a larger group of schools called 'The Maltby Learning Trust'. This trust includes several other schools. Some of these are Sir Thomas Wharton Academy, Wath Academy, and various primary academies.
Maltby Academy also shares a sixth form with Sir Thomas Wharton Academy. This joint sixth form is known as 'Post 16 @ MLT'.
School Leadership
The first Headmaster of Maltby Grammar School was Mr. Gerald Rush, who served from 1931 to 1961. Mr. Arthur Dodman followed him.
The role of 'Headmaster' later changed to 'Principal'. Mr. Richard Wood is the current Principal of Maltby Academy, a role he has held since June 2019.
