History of the Depot
The Malvern tram depot first opened its doors on May 30, 1910. It was built by a group called the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT). Later, in 1920, the depot became part of the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board. In 1930, another building for trams was added across the street.
In 1999, when the public transport system changed, the depot was managed by a company called M>Tram. Then, in 2004, Yarra Trams took over all the tram services, including Malvern depot. A cool change happened in 2005: the road between the two tram buildings was closed to cars. This allowed them to add two more tracks for trams!
Important Old Buildings
The buildings at Malvern tram depot are very old and important. They are officially listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. This means they are protected because of their history and special design.
How the Depot is Set Up
