The Mamariga shuttle is a special automated train. It is a type of funicular railway. This shuttle connects the Bilbao metro station in Santurtzi to the Mamariga neighborhood. Both places are in the town of Santurtzi, in the Greater Bilbao area of Spain.
Building the Mamariga Shuttle
The idea to build a way to get from the Santurtzi metro station to the Mamariga neighborhood was not part of the first plans for Metro Line 2.
Work on building this funicular started in late 2007. The shuttle opened in September 2010. This was more than a year after the main metro station opened.
In June 2015, the Mamariga end of the funicular had some damage from a fire. The shuttle was closed for repairs. It reopened in December of that same year after everything was fixed.
How the Shuttle Works
The Mamariga end of the line is not seen as a separate metro station. Instead, it is like an entrance or access point to the Santurtzi station.
Since 2013, it has been free to use the funicular. You do not need to pay a fare. The shuttle runs during the same hours as the metro trains. On the funicular, trains leave about every 3 minutes.
The funicular is 353 m (0.219 mi) long. It goes up 42 m (138 ft) in height. The line has two tracks. Each track works on its own, which means two trains can go at the same time.
