Mamochisane's Early Life
Mamochisane was the daughter of King Sebetwane. She had a half-brother named Prince Sekeletu and another brother or half-sister named Prince Mpepe. Her uncle was King Mbololo.
Becoming Queen
When her father, King Sebetwane, passed away in 1851, Mamochisane became the new queen. Her father had planned for her to rule, even though she had brothers.
Friendship with David Livingstone
Mamochisane continued the friendship her father had started with the famous traveler David Livingstone. She gave him permission to explore her entire kingdom. This was a big deal because it helped Livingstone learn more about the area.
Stepping Down from Power
When David Livingstone returned to the Makololo capital, Linyati, in 1853, he found something surprising. Mamochisane had decided to step down as queen. She gave up her power to her brother, Sekeletu, who then became the new king.
Livingstone wrote that Mamochisane wanted to have a stable husband and her own family. As a ruler, she was expected to have many different husbands. This was to make sure no single man gained too much power. She chose to give up her rule for a more personal life.
Family Life
Mamochisane had a nephew named Litali, who was Sekeletu's son. She later married King Sipopa Lutangu.
