Manchester is a small place in Walker County, Alabama, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it's not an official town or city with its own local government. Manchester is located along Alabama State Route 195. It is about 6.1 miles (9.8 km) north-northeast of Jasper.
History of Manchester
Manchester started as a place important for cutting down trees and making wood products. This is often called a lumber center.
Lumber and Coal Industries
The Manchester Lumber Company owned a lot of the forests nearby. They even built a school and a church for the people living in the community. Much of the wood from Manchester was used to build special boats called flatboats. These flatboats were used to carry coal. For a short time, a company called Manchester Coal Company also mined coal in the area.
Post Office and Airport
Manchester had its own post office. It was open from 1907 until 1957. Today, the Walker County Airport is located in Manchester.
