A Look at Mandeville Place's History

How Mandeville Place Got Its Name

Mandeville Place was built around the year 1777. It was named after the Duke of Manchester. He was also known as Viscount Mandeville. The Duke lived close by in a place called Manchester Square.

Keeping Its Special Name

In 1936, the London County Council suggested a big change. They wanted to rename Mandeville Place, Thayer Street, and James Street. Their idea was to call them all "Marylebone High Street." This would make the whole route from Oxford Street to Marylebone Road have one name.

However, many people did not like this idea. Shopkeepers on other streets worried about the cost of changing signs. They also thought customers might get confused. People living on Mandeville Place felt their street had a special reputation. They liked its connection to the famous Oxford Street. They didn't want to lose that feeling by being linked to a different road. Because of these reasons, the name change never happened.

Buildings Along the Street

Impressive Architecture

The buildings on Mandeville Place are quite striking. They look much grander than those on Thayer Street or James Street. This might be because of its connection to the Duke of Manchester. Most buildings here are five or six stories tall, not counting the basement. This makes them perfect for large hotels or company headquarters. The streets to the north and south are mostly for shops.

Famous Buildings and Businesses

Mandeville Place is home to some important places. You can find the large School of Economic Science here. There's also the four-star Mandeville Hotel. Another business, Claessens International, is located at number 3. This company specializes in branding for alcoholic drinks.
