The Mangakino Stream is a stream in New Zealand. It is a tributary of the mighty Waikato River. This stream flows into Lake Maraetai. This lake is found just before the small town of Mangakino.
The Mangakino Stream is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) long. It starts high up on the eastern side of Mount Pureora. This mountain is part of the Hauhungaroa Range. The stream then makes its way down to the lake.
The stream was once known as the Mangakino River. By 1949, both names were used.
What's in a Name?
The name Mangakino comes from the Māori language. In Māori, manga means "stream." The word kino means "useless" or "stagnant." So, Mangakino can be understood as "stagnant stream" or "useless stream."
