Manhattan Soap Company facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Manhattan Soap Company was a business that started in 1890 in New York City. It was known for making Sweetheart toilet soap and other cleaning products. In 1937, the company's main office was located at 441 Lexington Avenue (Manhattan). The Manhattan Soap Company continued to operate until July 31, 1956, when it was bought by the Purex Corporation Ltd.

Building a New Factory

In November 1916, the company bought a large piece of land, about 100,000 square feet, right on the water. This land was in Long Island City, near the Dutch Kills Canal. The Manhattan Soap Company bought this property from another company to build a brand new factory. Before this, one of their factories was at 52 Stone Street (Manhattan).

Fair Advertising Practices

In April 1937, the Manhattan Soap Company made an agreement about its advertising. They agreed to stop using the word "doctor" in their ads. This was because using that word might make people think that doctors had helped create their products, which wasn't true.

The company also promised the Federal Trade Commission that they would not use misleading prices on their soap boxes. The Federal Trade Commission is a government agency that helps protect consumers and makes sure businesses advertise fairly. This agreement helped ensure that customers knew exactly what they were buying.
