Manijeh Razeghi is an amazing Iranian-American scientist. She works with tiny materials called semiconductors and special devices that use light, known as optoelectronic devices. She is a true pioneer in creating new ways to build these materials.
Her work has led to big improvements in technology. For example, she helped develop the super-fast internet we use today. Her current research explores exciting new areas. This includes special lasers and tiny devices called quantum dots.
About Her Career
Manijeh Razeghi first studied nuclear physics at Tehran University. Later, she earned her doctorate from Université de Paris in France.
In 1986, she became the head of a special lab at Thomson-CSF. Here, she made a huge discovery. She developed a technique called metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). This method helps grow very thin layers of materials. It was a big step forward for semiconductor physics. She wrote about her work in her first book in 1989.
In 1991, Professor Razeghi moved to the United States. She joined Northwestern University as a professor. She also became the director of the Center for Quantum Devices. There, she continued her important research. She worked on many types of quantum devices, like lasers and light detectors. She published her second book in 1995.
In 2018, Professor Razeghi received a very special award. It was the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Electrical Engineering. She won it for creating powerful lasers. These lasers work at room temperature and can detect explosives and germs. Her work also helps create super-fast WiFi systems.
She holds 60 patents, which are special rights for her inventions. She has also written 20 books and over 1000 scientific papers. Professor Razeghi still teaches at Northwestern University. She created programs for students to learn about solid-state engineering. She has guided many students through their PhD and Master's degrees.
