The Mann Mound is an ancient Native American mound located in Ohio. It sits near the small community of Jacksonburg in Butler County. This large, tree-covered mound is found at the edge of a field.

It stands about 20 feet (6.1 m) (6 meters) tall. Its base measures around 540 feet (160 m) (165 meters) around. This makes it a very impressive ancient structure.

What is the Mann Mound?

A mound is a raised pile of earth and rocks. Many ancient cultures built mounds for different reasons. The Mann Mound was likely used as a burial site. It was built by the Adena culture. The Adena people lived in this area long ago. They were known for building many such mounds.

Discovering Ancient Secrets

In November 1868, local people started digging into the mound. They were looking for gravel. As they dug deeper, they found something amazing. They discovered several burial vaults made of limestone.

These vaults were square-shaped, about 3 feet (0.91 m) (1 meter) on each side. Each vault held a human skeleton. It looked like the skeletons had been placed in a sitting position. The vaults were stacked up from the bottom of the mound. They reached almost to the top. Small amounts of gravel separated each vault.

Eight skeletons were carefully taken from these vaults. They were then sent to the Smithsonian Institution. This institution studies history and science. These findings helped experts learn more about the Adena culture.

Why is the Mann Mound Important?

Even though parts of the mound were dug up, the Mann Mound is still very important. It is a valuable archaeological site. This means it's a place where scientists study human history. It is the second largest ancient mound still standing in Butler County.

An archaeologist named J.P. MacLean wrote about the mound in 1879. His survey helped record its existence. In 1971, the Mann Mound was officially recognized for its historical value. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important places across the United States.
