The Mann River Nature Reserve is a special protected area in eastern Australia. It's located on the edge of the Great Dividing Range in New South Wales. This reserve covers about 7,128 hectares, which is a huge area! You can find it about 57 kilometers east of Glen Innes. The Mann River actually flows right through the middle of the reserve.
How the Reserve Began
The Mann River Nature Reserve was created to protect this beautiful area. It officially became a reserve on July 7, 1985. This means it was formally announced and set aside as a protected place. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service takes care of it today.
The reserve is near the old Grafton Road. This road used to be a main route between Glen Innes and Grafton. It was first built in the 1840s. Back then, people were very interested in cutting down red cedar trees in the area.
Exploring the Landscape
The Mann River Nature Reserve is part of the Great Dividing Range. This means the land is quite mountainous with hills and valleys. Several creeks and rivers flow through the reserve. The biggest one is the Mann River itself.
The reserve is covered in forests with many native Australian trees. Because there are so many trees, bushfires can sometimes start. This often happens in the warm summer months, especially if there hasn't been much rain.
The nature reserve is home to lots of different Australian animals. You might spot kangaroos hopping around. There are also quolls, which are small, spotted marsupials. Wallabies, which are like smaller kangaroos, also live here.
The highest point in the reserve is Tommys Rock Lookout. It sits at an elevation of 1,015 meters above sea level. From there, you can get amazing views of the surrounding nature.
Fun Things to Do
The Mann River Nature Reserve is not as well-known as some other national parks. However, it's a great place to visit if you love nature. There are places where you can set up camp and stay overnight. You can also explore the park by walking on its special tracks. These tracks let visitors see the beautiful forests and rivers up close.
