Mannanana Range facts for kids
The Mannanana Range (called Tjuntinya by the local Pitjantjatjara people) is a mountain range located in the southwest part of the Northern Territory, Australia. It is part of a larger group of mountains known as the Petermann Ranges. This range is mostly a single ridge, stretching for about 30 kilometres (19 mi) (about 18.6 miles).
The Mannanana Range goes northwest towards a place called Kaltukatjara. It starts near Tjunti, where the Hull River separates it from the Curdie Range. The Hull River flows around the southern side of the Mannanana Range and then runs along its northeastern side.
What's in a Name?
The name "Mannanana" was first written on maps by a person named Herbert Basedow. This name comes from the Pitjantjatjara word Maṉanya. Interestingly, Maṉanya is actually the name for the mountain range just to the west of the Mannanana Range.
The local Pitjantjatjara people have their own name for the Mannanana Range, which is Tjuntinya. This name comes from the Tjunti soakage (a natural water source) found at the eastern end of the range.
