Manokin River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Manokin River is a cool river in Somerset County, Maryland. It flows into a larger body of water called Tangier Sound, which is part of the famous Chesapeake Bay. The Manokin River starts its journey east of a town called Princess Anne, Maryland. It flows right through Princess Anne and then gets much wider, becoming a "tidal estuary." This means its water level changes with the ocean's tides, mixing fresh river water with salty bay water.

The Manokin River is about 17 miles (27 kilometers) long. Along its path, several smaller streams, called tributaries, join it. These include Kings Creek, Back Creek, St. Peters Creek, Broad Creek, and Fishing Creek. A long time ago, during the colonial period (when America was still forming), boats could travel far up the Manokin River, all the way to Princess Anne.
