Manuel Gilman Batshaw (born April 17, 1915 – died July 18, 2016) was a Canadian social worker. A social worker helps people and families solve problems in their lives. He is most famous for starting the Batshaw Youth and Family Centres.
He worked for over 50 years helping people in Quebec. In the 1970s, he helped Vietnamese refugees who came to Canada by boat. In 1975, he led a group that looked into problems at places for young people. Their report helped create new laws to protect kids. In 1993, several groups that helped English-speaking families joined together. They were named the Batshaw Youth and Family Centres to honor him.
Mr. Batshaw received special awards for his work. These included an honorary degree from McGill University and the Order of Canada.
Early Life and Family Background
Manuel Batshaw was born in Montreal in 1915. His parents were Jewish and came to Canada from Russia in 1903. His father was named Tuvier, and his mother was Golda. Manuel was the youngest of four children. His older brother, Harry Batshaw, became the first Jewish judge in a high court in Canada.
Manuel's Family Life
In 1940, Manuel Batshaw married Rachel Lewitt, who was also a social worker. They had one child, a son named Mark Batshaw. Mark later became a doctor who helped children and studied how kids grow and develop. After Rachel passed away in 1990, Manuel married Ruth Schleien. Ruth had volunteered for many years with a group called the Federation CJA, which helps the Jewish community.
Manuel Batshaw finished his studies at McGill University in 1937. He then joined the army and worked as a social service officer. He quickly moved up in rank to become a captain. Manuel Batshaw lived to be 101 years old. He passed away on July 18, 2016.
