Manuel Portela y Valladares (born in Pontevedra, Spain, on January 31, 1867 – died in Bandol, France, on April 29, 1952) was an important Spanish politician. He lived during a time known as the Second Spanish Republic. Manuel Portela held many important jobs, including being the 43rd Attorney General of Spain from 1912 to 1913.

Early Life & Political Start
Manuel Portela began his career as a lawyer. He was a member of the Liberal Party, a political group in Spain. His early political roles helped him gain experience. He learned how the government worked.
Serving Barcelona
Portela became the civil governor of Barcelona twice. He held this important position in 1910 and again in 1923. As civil governor, he was in charge of keeping order and managing public services in the city. He also served as the Minister of Promotion in September 1923. This role involved overseeing public works and development.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1935, Spain faced some challenges. After a major event in October 1934, Alejandro Lerroux chose Manuel Portela to be the Minister of the Interior. This job meant he was responsible for the country's internal security and administration.
Leading the Government
Later in 1935, on December 14, Niceto Alcalá-Zamora appointed Portela as the 130th president of the government. This position is similar to a prime minister. He was now the leader of Spain's government.
Preparing for Elections
Manuel Portela formed two different governments during his time as prime minister. His main task was to prepare the country for the elections held on February 16, 1936. These elections were very important for Spain's future. The Popular Front political group won these elections.
Later Years
After the elections, Manuel Portela's time as prime minister ended. He continued to be an important figure in Spanish politics. He lived until 1952, passing away in Bandol, France.
