Manuel Quintano Bonifaz was born in a place called Salas de los Infantes around the year 1699. He grew up to become a significant figure in the Spanish church.

Becoming a Bishop

On January 20, 1749, Manuel Quintano Bonifaz was chosen for an important role. He became an Auxiliary Bishop for the city of Toledo. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop in a large area. At the same time, he also became a Titular Bishop of Farsala. This means he held the title of bishop for a place that no longer had a bishop living there.

He was officially made a bishop on March 16, 1749. A high-ranking church official named Cardinal Enrico Enríquez performed the ceremony.

Leading the Spanish Inquisition

In 1755, Manuel Quintano Bonifaz took on a very powerful job. He became the Grand Inquisitor of Spain. This was a top position in the Spanish Inquisition, which was a system that looked into people's religious beliefs. He stayed in this role until 1774.

During this time, he also became the Apostolic Administrator of Toledo. This meant he was in charge of managing the church's affairs in Toledo.

Director of the National Library

Besides his church duties, Manuel Quintano Bonifaz also had a role in education and culture. From 1755 to 1761, he was the Director of the Biblioteca Nacional de España. This is the national library of Spain, a very important place for books and knowledge.
