Manuel Uribe Garza (born June 11, 1965 – died May 26, 2014) was a man from Mexico. He became known worldwide because he was one of the heaviest people ever recorded. At his heaviest, he weighed about 600 kilograms (1,320 pounds).
Manuel was unable to leave his bed starting in 2002. He later lost a lot of weight, about 230 kilograms (507 pounds), with help from doctors. This was more than one-third of his body weight. He passed away in 2014, weighing 394 kilograms (869 pounds).
Manuel gained global attention in January 2006. He asked for help on Mexican television. This led to both private and public support. He was also featured in TV documentaries. These shows were about his life and his efforts to lose weight.
Manuel's Weight Loss Journey
Manuel Uribe returned to Mexico and asked for help on TV. The government assigned doctors and nutritionists to him. He turned down offers for special surgery. Instead, he worked with Barry Sears, who created the Zone diet.
Sears gave him a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Manuel ate five small meals a day. These meals included egg-white omelets, salads, chicken, fish, fruits, and greens. By February 2008, he had lost about 230 kilograms (507 pounds). This big weight loss made him hope for a "Guinness World Record" for losing the most weight.
Manuel tried to use his fame to help others. He planned to start the Manuel Uribe Foundation. This group would teach Mexicans about healthy eating. However, the organization was never officially started.
In October 2008, he gave diet advice to José Luis Garza. José was also very heavy and couldn't get out of bed. Manuel inspired José to try and get better. Manuel's girlfriend even brought healthy foods to José's home. Sadly, José passed away five days later.
Manuel's Second Wedding
On October 26, 2008, Manuel married his second wife, Claudia. They had been together for four years. At this time, Manuel weighed 318 kilograms (701 pounds). He had lost 269 kilograms (593 pounds) by then.
Manuel said, "I am proof you can find love in any situation." He added that it was all about faith. He hoped to start a new family and live a happy life.
He was moved to his wedding on a special, strong bed. The bed was decorated with cream and gold colors. It also had bright sunflowers. A truck carried him to the civil wedding. Manuel wore a white silk shirt. He waited to greet Claudia. She walked down stairs in an ivory dress and a tiara. Over 400 guests were there to celebrate.
Despite the happy event, his second marriage did not last long. According to his mother, it ended about three and a half years before he died in 2014.
Manuel's Passing
Manuel Uribe was taken to the hospital on May 2, 2014. He had problems with his heart and liver. He passed away on May 26, 2014, at 48 years old. His death was caused by liver failure. After he died, his body was cremated. His ashes were buried in Monterrey.
