The Manufacturing and Wholesale Historic District is a special area in Burlington, Iowa. It's recognized as a historic district because of its important old buildings. This district is located right next to the main business area of the city.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This means it's a nationally important place. The district has 32 buildings. Most of these, 28 of them, are called contributing properties. This means they help show why the district is historic. The other buildings are newer and don't add to its historic value.
The train tracks of the old Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad run through the district. These tracks were very important for the businesses that grew here. The buildings in the district are different sizes. Some are small, one-story offices. Others are large, six-story buildings.
Nine of the buildings were built before the year 1900. The oldest one was built in 1876. The other historic buildings were constructed between 1900 and the 1930s. All the buildings are made of brick.
This area was mostly home to factories and large wholesale businesses. These businesses sold goods in bulk to other companies. They operated here until the 1970s and 1980s. A few of these types of businesses are still there today.
Historic Buildings of the District
Many of the buildings in this district were built for practical uses. They had simple designs. However, one building stands out. It's the John Blaul and Sons Wholesale Grocery building. This building was constructed in 1892. It has a special design style called Romanesque Revival architecture.
