Phacelia floribunda is a type of plant known by a few common names. These include many-flowered phacelia, southern island phacelia, and San Clemente Island phacelia. This plant grows only on two islands: San Clemente Island in California, and Guadalupe Island near Baja California, Mexico. It likes to grow in the canyons of these islands, in an area called coastal sage scrub.

About the Many-Flowered Phacelia

The Phacelia floribunda is an annual herb. This means it lives for only one growing season. It has a stem that branches out and stands upright, growing up to 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) tall. The plant feels sticky and hairy to the touch.

What it Looks Like

The leaves of this phacelia can be up to 18 centimeters (about 7 inches) long. Each leaf is divided into several smaller parts called leaflets. The edges of these leaflets are often lobed, meaning they have rounded sections.

The plant's flowers grow in a special cluster called an inflorescence. This cluster is hairy and curves or coils to one side. The flowers are shaped like small bells and are purple or bluish. Each flower is less than one centimeter long.
