The History of Maoam Sweets
The story of Maoam began in 1900. A man named Edmund Münster took over a company in Düsseldorf, Germany. This company first made mostly liquorice candy.
How Maoam Got Its Name
Around 1930 or 1931, Münster got a special permit to make a new kind of chewy fruit candy. He called it "Maoam." This name was invented! It's actually a short way of saying a German phrase: "Mundet allen ohne Ausnahme." This means "Everyone, without exception, likes it!"
In August 1930, Münster officially registered his idea. He got a "utility model" for Maoam. This covered the name, the candy itself, its packaging, and even similar products. Soon after, Edmund Münster GmbH & Co. started making the candy. Each sweet was wrapped in wax paper.
Maoam's First Appearance
Edmund Münster first offered Maoam to customers on Easter in 1931. The special Maoam logo was already designed by then. This logo is unique because it looks the same even if you turn it upside down! It has only changed a little bit since then. Because Maoam was so popular, other companies soon tried to copy the chewy sweets. After World War II, Münster started making the candies again.
Maoam Joins Haribo
In 1986, the famous confectionery company Haribo bought Maoam. Haribo, based in Bonn, Germany, took over all the production and rights to the candy.
From 1930 until 1982, Maoam sweets were made in a factory in Düsseldorf. Later, production moved to an old factory in Neuss, another German city.
Maoam Advertisements
Maoam has used a very well-known slogan in its advertisements. The slogan is "Was wollt ihr denn?!" This means "What do you want then?!" in German.
The Famous Slogan in Action
In these commercials, a group of people are asked what they want next. For example, it might be fans at a football match. They are given two choices, like "Do you want extra time?" or "Do you want a penalty shootout?" The crowd always shouts "No!" to both options. Then, the next question is "What do you want then?" The audience then loudly shouts, "Maoam, Maoam..." A famous football referee, Walter Eschweiler, even appeared in some of these ads!
Maoam in Sports
Maoam has also been involved in sports. From 2003 to 2005, a professional volleyball team in Germany changed its name. They became "Maoam Mendig" because of a sponsorship deal with the candy brand. In 2016, Maoam launched a new advertising campaign in the UK. It was called "full on till its gone" and featured a person dancing in a very unusual way.
