The community of Maples was named after a man named Lewis S. Maples. He was a very successful businessman who worked with lumber, which is wood used for building.
A post office, where people could send and receive mail, was opened in Maples in 1854. This was an important service for the people living there. The post office served the community for many years before it finally closed in 1921.
