Mapleton is a small, quiet place in Houston County, Texas, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own city government like a big town does. In 2000, only 32 people lived there.
History
Mapleton was started around 1924 by a man named T. J. Maples and his family. When they first cleared the land, there were so many tree stumps left over that people used to call the area "Stumpville"!
By the mid-1930s, Stumpville had grown a bit. It had a small church, a few stores, and several homes. In 1950, the Maples family put up a sign that officially named the town "Mapleton."
In the early 1990s, Mapleton was still a spread-out rural community with just a few shops. The population was recorded as 32 people in the year 2000.
Sadly, on March 21, 2022, a strong tornado, called an EF2 tornado, caused damage to the small town.

Mapleton is located in the southwestern part of Houston County, Texas. You can find it right on Texas State Highway 21. It's about 18 miles (29 kilometers) southwest of a bigger town called Crockett.
