Maplewood is a small, unincorporated community located in northern Salem Township, within Shelby County, Ohio, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a recognized place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or a town. Maplewood has its own post office with the ZIP code 45340, and it's easy to find because it sits right along State Route 65.

History of Maplewood

The story of Maplewood began to take shape when a post office was opened there in 1880. For a while, the community stayed about the same size. However, things really started to change and grow in 1892 when a railroad line was built through the area.

This railroad was originally part of the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad. Back then, railroads were super important for moving goods and people across the country, helping communities like Maplewood connect with bigger towns and cities. Today, that same railway line is still active and is now operated by the Indiana and Ohio Railway, which is owned by Genesee and Wyoming. It continues to be a part of Maplewood's daily life.
