María Delgado Nadal (born October 8, 1997) is an amazing Paralympic swimmer from Spain. She has competed in many national and international swimming events. María is blind and has won several medals throughout her career.

About María

María Delgado Nadal comes from the Aragon region of Spain. She was born with a vision problem called congenital toxoplasmosis. This condition means she has only peripheral vision, which is like seeing only out of the corners of your eyes. She has had this limited vision since she was born.

Swimming Career

María is an S12 classified swimmer. This means she competes in a category for swimmers with a certain level of vision impairment. She is a proud member of the Aragua AD swimming club. She also works with ONCE, an organization that supports blind people in Spain.

Early Competitions

In 2010, María competed in the Spanish Age Swimming Championships. These championships are for blind and visually impaired swimmers. She won first place in almost all her races! She finished third in just one race. Later that year, she won two bronze medals at the Paralympic Swimming Championship of Spain. She was representing her home region, Aragon.

Winning More Medals

María continued to shine in 2011. At the Paralympic Swimming Championship of Spain, she won a gold medal in the 50-meter backstroke. She also got another gold in the 100-meter freestyle. She earned a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke and a bronze in the 50-meter freestyle. She also competed in other local championships that year.

Training for the Future

In 2012, María joined a special program called Project AXA. This program helps young Spanish athletes become top international competitors. She attended a training camp that focused on improving her swimming technique. By this time, people saw her as a potential future competitor for the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

That same year, she won a bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly at the Paralympic Swimming Championship of Spain. She also earned a gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly and a silver in the 100-meter freestyle at the age championships.

International Stage

In 2013, María trained hard at the CAR Higher Sports Council in Madrid. She trained with 25 other talented athletes. She won two silver medals at the Paralympic Swimming Championship of Spain.

María also competed at the Swimming Championship of Catalonia. There, she was one of nine Spanish swimmers who qualified for the World Championships. At just 15 years old, she went to the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal, Canada. She competed in several races, including the 100-meter backstroke and 100-meter butterfly. Her main goal was to gain experience for the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

Paralympic Success

María's hard work paid off at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. She won two bronze medals! One was in the 100-meter backstroke S12, and the other was in the 50-meter freestyle S12.

She continued her success at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris, where she earned two more bronze medals. These were for the 100-meter backstroke S12 and the Mixed 4x100-meter freestyle relay.

María has also won bronze medals at the World Para Swimming Championships in 2015 and 2023. She also has two bronze medals from the World Para Swimming European Championships in 2014.
