Maria Enriquez de Luna (born 1474 – died 1539) was an important noblewoman from Spain. She was known for being very intelligent, religious, and good with money. Maria was also deeply devoted to her family. She became the wife of Juan (Giovanni) Borgia, who was the second Duke of Gandia.
Maria came from a powerful family. Her father was Enrique Enríquez de Quiñones. This made her grandfather Fadrique Enríquez. Her aunt, Juana Enríquez, was the Queen of Aragon. This meant Maria was a first cousin to King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile. Because of these connections, she was part of the important House of Trastamara royal family.
Maria married Juan Borgia between 1493 and 1494. They had two children together. Their son, Juan de Borja y Enriquez, later became the 3rd Duke of Gandía. Their daughter, Isabel de Borja y Enriquez, was born shortly after her father passed away. Isabel grew up to become the abbess of Santa Clara in Gandia, a leader in a religious community. The younger Juan was also the father of Saint Francis Borgia, a very respected figure in history.
Seeking Answers After Her Husband's Death
After the time of Pope Alexander VI's leadership, Maria faced a difficult period. Her husband, Juan Borgia, passed away under unclear circumstances. Maria, along with her aunt Queen Isabella of Castile, worked to find out what happened. They sought to investigate the events surrounding Juan's death. They wanted to ensure that justice was served.
